How to create a parenting plan during divorce

During a divorce in the San Diego area there are many different issues that the couple must resolve as they separate their lives from one life to two lives. People must divide their physical possessions and other assets. They also must determine how they will care for their children when they are no longer living under the same roof.

The two main decisions that parents need to make during a divorce are child custody decisions and parenting time decisions. However, those two decisions do not address all of the issues parents will encounter as they co-parent after the divorce. To address all of the issues, parents should develop a good parenting plan.

Factors to consider in a parenting plan

The most important factor to consider is what is in the children’s best interest. Each child and family is different and parents need to consider each child’s needs as they develop their plan. They also have to consider the location of each parent’s new home in relation to each other, the children’s school and activities, which are important for the child.

Parents also need to develop a regular parenting time schedule. There are different schedules that parents can consider, but ultimately they need to choose a schedule that truly works for everyone. The schedule should include not only the days the parents have the children, but also the exchange times and other factors to create consistency.

Developing a plan for communication is important as well. This includes communication between the parents and the parents and the children when they are at the other parent’s home. This could include an online schedule so both parents know about events and appointments. It may also include how the parents will contact the children, which really depends on the age and maturity of the children. Part of this communication plan needs to include how they will discuss major issues regarding their children as well.

Finally, parents need to ensure that they maintain the goals of their parenting plan after it is created. So, stating those specific goals is important so both parents can keep the focus on that goal even during times when they are frustrated or angry with each other. These plans are for the children’s best interest not necessarily the parents.
